Eagle Insurance PLC began operations in Sri Lanka in 1988 as CTC Eagle Insurance Company with Ceylon Tobacco Company (a member of B A T Industries, UK) as the Company’s main shareholder.

Following a global strategy in 1999, B A T Industries divested its financial services businesses to Zurich Financial Services Group based in Switzerland. Eagle thus became part of the global conglomerate Zurich Financial Services, with its major local shareholder being Sri Lanka’s development banking giant, National Development Bank (NDB).

In 2003, NDB through its 75.6% holding in its subsidiary, Capital Development and Investment Company Limited, (CDIC) acquired 100% of NDB Finance Lanka Limited, the holding company (87.27%) of Eagle Insurance. The Bank of Ceylon too had a shareholding in Eagle through its 23.92% holding in Capital Development and Investment Company Limited.

Eagle once again became part of a multinational group in 2006, when UK’s largest insurer - AVIVA International Holdings Ltd., became the ultimate holding company of Eagle with an indirect shareholding of 51%. NDB Bank has an indirect shareholding of 27.42 % and direct shareholding of 5% in Eagle Insurance. Bank of Ceylon too, has an indirect shareholding of 8.67% in the Company.
